Transcript: Welcome to this Queen the Greatest special, in which we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the phenomenal Bohemian Rhapsody. On October 31st 1975, Queen's masterpiece was released and began the journey to becoming one of the greatest songs of all time. Brilliant and completely unique, its creative and technical complexity took everyone by surprise. Everyone, that is, except the band. It's interesting. Bohemian Rhapsody is viewed as this giant step for Queen creatively, but from the inside it didn't really look that way. It didn't feel that way. It's one of the threads of Queen in our development. This is the stuff that Freddie brings to the table, and we're used to it, and we love it. It's very entertaining. It's quite off the wall, and you don't always know where he's going. That's the thing that people love most about Freddie. You didn't know where he was coming from. So this was fairly typical. He comes in and goes, there's this bit, and I go... And there's another bit which we'll do, you know, and there's an operator, and then another, and there'll be a solo. Oh yeah, okay, Freddie, you know. And basically you have two choices, either you go, well, we're not really feeling it, which sometimes we would, or you go, yeah, actually this looks great, feels good, and we all dive in, we pile in, and we start learning it and playing it and offering ideas, and the whole queen machine swings into action. So clearly, for Freddie, Brian, Roger and John, Bohemian Rhapsody was part of the natural evolution of Queen. And in this exclusive interview for Queen the Greatest, Brian and Roger explain where, from a songwriting point of view, that particular evolution began. And you've only got to look at the first album, see My Fairy King, piano-based, quite complex, lots of mood changes and a fantasy lyric. In the land where horses born with eager wings And honeybees of lost bestings They're singing forever I stand with fallow deer And rivers made from wine so clear Flow by and forever I think it was certainly part of Freddie's journey, yeah. I mean, obviously, when we did Bohemian Rhapsody, we didn't know, you know, we're going to end up with that. But part of our thing was really experimentation, and it was very much on the first album, Queen, experimentation and it's very much on the first album Queen a track My Fairy King which I think is one of the more interesting tracks actually you know there's a lot of things of Freddie just sort of came out of him and particularly on that track it was complicated it was it had a lot of very difficult vocals that we had to sing the three of. And it had sort of fantastic elements. And he mentioned, you know, he mentioned, oh, Mother Mercury, you know, etc. So it was a flow, I think. Oh, Mother Mercury, look what they've done to me. I cannot run, I cannot hide On the second album, Queen II, there's a monumentally long and complicated track called March of the Black Queen, which involved a lot of rehearsal, a lot of singing, and it had so many different little sections. which involved a lot of rehearsal, a lot of singing, and it had so many different little sections. It's a lot more complicated in many ways than Bohemian Rhapsody. And, you know, it had a heavy bit. It had all the different ingredients that Bohemian Rhapsody had really and so it's a track I like to listen to because of the complexity of it yeah can't believe we learnt it all it was so bloody long and laborious and but satisfying you know. Yeah, I think Freddie's March of the Black Queen is very much a precursor of Bohemian Rhapsody. Its complexity is enormous, its breadth of imagination is giant. And in the same way, you have little bits of drama, little bits of chorus, little bits of guitar, little bits of heaviness, little bits of tenderness. And it's all there. It's a very similar kind of palette that he's painting from, that we're painting from. There's an evolution in Freddie's lyrics and I think it's the way I see it, as his friend, and someone who spent an awful lot of time with him, I see Freddie as quite shy and quite insecure about putting his inner feelings into a song, because it's a very revealing thing. So in the beginning, it's very much fantasies, very much dragons and pixies and elves, and he loved the Richard Dad painting which materialised into the Faerie Fellas master stroke later on. Now the Fairyfellas Masterstroke is incredibly complex and ought to be just as shocking to people as Bohemian Rhapsody because it's unique. No one's ever done anything like that and all these little pieces that come in and go out and little tings and contrapuntal things and he's doing something over here i'm doing something over here we just remixed it all and it's fascinating to make it all work it's incredibly complicated uh there are sort of swooping counter six-part harmonies here there coming like this and crossing and it's very bloody complicated that song um although it's quite short and and it's uh rather wonderful in its eccentricity i think uh yeah it's a nice interesting track didn't come across as big as we thought it would but um it's an interesting exercise in eccentric over-elaboration. But this is Freddie and this is Queen because this is the kind of music we're evolving as we go along, quite gradually. Very dandy, tickling the fancy of his lady friend What a query fellow
